What is just right pattern? Shoe pattern

This is a title for one my unfinished project. Now that I have a kid, I like to make slippers for her and this winter I can’t forget the idea, to make shoes. I can’t go near the fact, that some people know how to make them and I don’t. I was playing with a shoe-slipper patterns a few months ago and then I stop with no reason. The spring is coming and she need a new pair of shoes and I have a special need that they need to be as soft as a fabric slippers are, because she walk better in her slippers then in her shoes. It is obvious if shoes are not soft they are not ok for kid with ten kilos. The winter is almost finished and I bought the rubber boots for rainy days and now I need to make an ordinary soft shoe. I’m exited and I plan to play a lot with a pattern, and not as much with materials. Maybe at the end I will have just one shoe pattern, but will be the right or not I can’t tell.
If it will be comfy, easy to make and soft for little legs then it will be perfect. But I’m not sure if I will stay with just one pattern, because when you start doing the pattern, then it is so easy to do one or two more.
Actually now I’m so exited, that I need to share my experience with a prototype, than I made today. Jap, this will be a story how I get the shoe out from leftovers of fake leather, a little bit fabric and a piece of soft rubber, some similar product like a yoga mats are. I wouldn’t talk how I draw a pattern itself, because it is hart to talk about, and I actually plan to make one more photo tutorial about it. I’m happy with the process itself I will show you some photos and OK, I would like to talk about it, maybe somebody have better idea or maybe is there somebody who is interested in making your own shoes, or maybe there are some shoemaker and he will said I talk nonsense. I didn’t believe how easy it is, if you have a pattern. The hand sewing this thing is so fun, that I can’t describe. And jep, this is great way of a new hobby. I’m in love and I promise you will be too.

Put your pattern on the leftovers of fake leather (this is my prototype, so don’t follow this instructions like for the finished result). I will also use a fabric, just because fake leather is not nice on one side, this pattern will be available in my shop and of course I will eliminate all errors, that I could seen on it.
For now it is just the process and maybe you will get the feeling how gorgeous it is to know how to make your own shoes.
These are the shoes for 1.5 years old kid. And I was working also on my size shoes 39 EU size.
I was planning to glue the soft piece (grey piece) to the back of the leather, but I was to lazy to wait for drying so instead I just sew the grey piece on to the back of the fabric. On this picture are the pattern of bottom shoe piece (SOLE) and all the elements from the same pattern part. If I have cow leather at home, I would have just one piece of leather.
I sew with a cik-cak stitch the fabric and the leather and then remove the fabric scraps.
Next I make all the holes in both pieces.
Make holes.
And some more.
Hand sewing with one waxy thread and two needles.
Detail of sewing (view from the side shoe).
Detail of sewing (view from the top shoe). This is so enjoying process, that you need to try.

    • Thanks. These are just a prototype, because I need to test the pattern in similar material than the finished shoes will be made. Is it freaky if I will have the same pattern shoes then my kid? Maybe it won’t look the same, because I hope I will have different color leather for our first pair of handmade shoes.
The important thing is, they are super comfy and easy to make and super, super soft for walking. I just wish to have some shoemaker to ask what he thinks.
I like the feel how they are looking, they have an old look, but at the same moment they feel modern.

    • They are just for me and my kid. I didn’t have a chance to design a proper shoe for mass production. I didn’t have a chance to learn from a shoemaking masters. So if somebody with a lot of practice will see this they will laugh. Or maybe not, they say making the first pair of shoes is not so easy, but I think it is not so impossible. Actually if you have a pattern it is easy and really fun. The fun part is you almost don’t need any tool for it and you could assemble them even in the park. This is funny and enjoyable hobby.
Let’s face it this is a primitive way of design, because shoe design itself is a science. They have special schools for it and I’m just an industrial designer with a fashion background and jobless freelancer.
